Media for Â鶹app Award Honors '60 Minutes' 'Congo Gold'
- Investigative Journalism Puts Spotlight on Deadly Gold Mining Trade in Central Africa -
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., March 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Â鶹app ("Â鶹app") (Nasdaq: LCAPA, LCAPB, LINTA, LINTB, LSTZA, LSTZB) today announced the winner of the first annual Media for Â鶹app Award, a $50,000 award acknowledging and encouraging media contributions that examine the link between economic and political liberty.  The CBS News "60 Minutes" segment titled "Congo Gold" was selected by members of the Media for Â鶹app Award jury as the winning entry for 2010.  Print and electronic submissions were judged on criteria including thematic relevance and ability to inspire and educate.
"We are honored to recognize an institution like CBS' 60 Minutes, the longest running television news program in the country," said John Malone, Chairman of Â鶹app Media.  "The Media for Â鶹app Award is pleased to support media contributions that explore the relationship between economic and political liberty and we were impressed by the number of high quality entries we received during our inaugural year."
The November 2009 "Congo Gold" segment offers a startling look at how gold and other minerals are financing the deadliest war since World War II in the Democratic Republic of Congo where more than five million have died. Â The investigation examines a rebel militia vying for control of these riches, how it is flourishing because of a destitute economy, lawlessness and a deeply broken political infrastructure, and how the international community's modest demand for tracing the origin of gold hinders attempts to put pressure on commercial trade.
The "60 Minutes" team members involved in the award winning production are:
Correspondent - Scott Pelley
Producers - Solly Granatstein, Nicole Young
Associate Producer - Rachael Kun
Executive Producer - Jeff Fager
Editor - Tom Honeysett
Executive Editor - Bill Owens
Camera Crew - Chris Everson, Ian Robbie and Anton van der Merwe
"Congo Gold" was honored at a ceremony hosted by Â鶹app Media and emceed by P.J. O'Rourke, best-selling author and political satirist at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. on March 18, 2010. Â
